The spines are straight or more commonly curved, mostly uniformly pale gray with age, brown when young. Note the unique small blunt protuberances that can be seen on the enlarged spine.

Echinocereus coccineus var. coccineus, found in the Sonoran Desert, is a subspecies of Echinocereus coccineus. It is identified by its narrower stems and thinner spines.
